what are these photographs even used for

The NOH8 Guy is basically exactly the point where “good intentions” run into the wall of “dubious notoriety” and our collective distaste for the latter means we stop cutting slack for the former, and I’m kind of fascinated by everybody’s reactions to him.

I’m fascinated by this as well!

Granted, I am much more fascinated by this brand of activism via narcissism of which things like NOH8 portraits and It Gets Better videos are a big part. It seems very American, doesn’t it? I can’t imagine Israeli elites getting ultra-airbrushed portraits done to show their solidarity with Palestinians, or Bulgarians recording their boring life stories for a “става по-добре” series for bullied Roma youth, etc etc.

But yeah, to Joe’s point, I definitely see this stuff as stupid and kind of pointless, but I also don’t see the harm. (Except when people point out that gay people can be terrible bullies and quite hateful.) Bouska has certainly done something with his work, and ya know, I wish him well, or whatever.
